beyond the assessment
The assessment gives us a place to start. The methodology gives us somewhere to go
A DISC assessment does something extraordinarily useful: it makes an enormous body of behavioral theory personal. Marston's Emotions of Normal People spans hundreds of pages. His work describes people responding to their environments, experiencing emotion, exercising power, adapting, changing and behaving differently under different conditions. The DISC assessment gives us a lens through which to begin experiencing all of that. Suddenly, the theory isn't just theory. It's about me. II recognize tendencies. I see familiar behaviors. I begin noticing how I respond to people and situations around me. These four letters give me a manageable doorway into something much larger. The problem begins when we mistake the doorway for the entire house.
Going beyond the assessment doesn't mean leaving it behind. It means using it to go further. Once the assessment has helped make the model personal, we can return to the larger methodology—and begin using it to observe behavior, consider context, test assumptions, notice movement and understand people with greater humility. The assessment helps us recognize DISC. The methodology teaches us how to see it. Experience it. Bring it actively into our lives.
